Every time a take a trip to the basement, I discover something from the past. This was hidden, taped on a random piece of foam-core I was about to throw in the trash. Glad I flipped it over.

I was learning how to use colored-pencils in 1995 – or at least a way to use them. I kept wanting them to blend like chalk or perhaps paint, but much to my chagrin and wasted paper, they don’t. As with all mediums they do what they do. Learn the rules first, then break them if you can.

Not sure if this was my more joyful iteration of Nas’ Illmatic album cover. I was in a productive and pleasant mood when I worked on this. I was mustering up as much joy possible in an often joyless place.
