Marion Shepilov Barry otherwise known as Marion Barry Jr. was the mayor of DC from 1979 to 1991 and then again 1995 to 1999. He also served on Council of the District of Columbia throughout the years as well.
Kenneth Carroll is an arts educator and poet from DC that has been an influence and mentor to quite a few of my friends. I was elated to have him stop by the old studio on Illinois Avenue and share a spoken word piece and some thoughts about arts education.
I was walking around DuPont with a couple cameras (I know, who does that) just gathering b-roll when I stumbled upon a gentleman playing the drums – Vinzee. I asked him if I could film him playing and he obliged.
At some point, I put these two performances together, much like I’ve done for a lot of The Angle pieces. I thought it was an interesting combination. I thought Mayor Barry’s middle name was interesting. So in titling the combo piece I used it an added “Love.”
