I filled my time while behind bars drawing all that I could, so here I reinterpreted one of my favorite photographs from 1972. The Pittsburgh Zoo was just up the street from us at the time, so going there was regular trip.

I was practicing drawing what I saw during those three years and gaining some perspective on perspective and “hand-eye coordination.” Nothing special about this particular exercise. It is, what it is. Doing things like this helped me “escape.” Taking the past and folding it creatively into the then present.

1995, pencil on paper from photograph.
